I'd been tracking prices on Intel's E6300 cpu for a while now, waiting for it to drop to "low-end" price points. I was running an XP workstation for my home office with an old AMD XP2600+ CPU that was not only getting frustratingly slow, but was becoming increasingly unstable (I suspect due to heat wearing on the core). Once I saw the current prices of the E6550 cpus almost at the same costs of the E6300, I pulled the trigger on all the gear for my latest build.
The goal for this build is to build a mid priced, entry level overclocked PC. From what I've read, I think we'll be able to achieve 3.5GHz at reliable temperatures for a solid 3 - 4 years of sevice.
My budget was $700 for this workstation which would include everything minus monitor, keyboard, mouse, etc. Anything I would be able to scavenge from previous boxes. Below is a list of what was ordered and the price paid. To keep things simple, I used NewEgg.com for everything. I might have been able to shop a bit more intensive to find another dollar or two here and there, but simplicity and convenience was well worth a single source for me.
